Sgt. Russell L. Collier, a combat medic who risked his life to save fellow soldiers under fire

By Frank Minnie

Born in Harrison, Arkansas, Collier dedicated 18 years to military service across the Navy, Army, and National Guard, and planned to retire after two more years of military service.

On October 3, 2004, Collier was killed in Taji, Iraq, while serving as a Medical Aidman with Battery A, 1st Battalion, 103rd Field Artillery Brigade. At the time, his unit was attached to the 1st Battalion, 206th Field Artillery Regiment, 39th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Collier made the ultimate sacrifice when he courageously exposed himself in an effort to render life-saving aid to a wounded comrade while under direct fire. His selfless and courageous actions that day earned him the Silver Star Medal, the U.S. Army's third-highest award for valor.

The Russell L. Collier Health Clinic was established at Fort Cavazos in recognition of Collier's valor and dedication. The clinic serves active duty, active-duty family members, retirees, and retiree family members and is the main aviation medical clinic as well.

As the Army celebrates a quarter-millennium of service, the Russell L. Collier Health Clinic serves not only as a medical facility but also as a living memorial to a soldier whose compassion and courage continue to inspire generations.
